Wow. I think this goes without my saying, but you definitely need to talk so you can get to know each other. That's what dates are for - an excuse to talk on the way to and from wherever you're going. Starting a conversation is easy. Begin with a trivial question, like "How was your day". He should have something short to say, and then should repeat the question. Relate to him a story. Feel free to go off on tangents. Just practice talking together, let your personality influence your word choice and use of humor, but don't think about it. If you can't pull off a conversation, you should probably call off the relationship, but I think that once you get past the your nerves, it'll be quite natural.
