Boys wore strap shoes or Mary Janes at least into the 1940s in the USA. In Europe boys wore that style of shoe into the 50s and 60s. The strap shoe was never called a Mary Jane in Europe. Even in the 70s, 80s, 90s boys wore the style for special occasions, especially if they were children of upperclass parents. White or black patent Mary Janes for boys were worn for weddings and other very dressy occasions. Pictures in Vanity Fair as well as other glossy mags showed boys in dressy outfits (often shorts, shirt, tie, white knee socks) wearing Mary Janes. Fancy sailor suits are still worn with white knee socks and Mary Janes. Young boys have also been seen wearing Mary Jane tap shoes, especially those with the laces instead of buckle. We still see pictures of little boys in T straps (which some call Mary Janes).
