You most likely do have rear wheel ABS. The system has deteced a malfunction and set a code.
A problem with your anti-lock braking system. Your brakes and your ABS are two different issues. Your ABS system keeps your brakes from locking when coming to a hard stop. If it is not working correctly your light will come on. Best to have a shop look at it.
check brake lines, make sure there is no leaking
The accumulator stores brake fluid under very high pressure. An electric pump keeps the accumulator pressurized with brake fluid. When you press the brake pedal, pressurized fluid from the accumulator operates the brakes.
Check your brake fluid level.
The brake fluid level may be low in the reservoir. If the reservoir is low it's telling you the brake pads are worn down. As the brake linings wear down the fluid level drops and eventually turns on the brake light. Have a mechanic check your brakes soon. See "Related Questions" below in case the brake light in question is/are the ones in the taillights. Not uncommon for Windstar brake lights to turn themselves on.
keeps you from putting car in gear unless brakes are pushed. I have been doing that wanting to put the truck in gear but it is not happening. It is still stuck in park.
My understanding is this: HGV brakes operate on compressed air as I am sure you know, however the brakes are spring loaded which means rather than applying the brakes, the air pressure is what keeps them OFF, so when the system runs out of air the brakes will lock on solid. when you are driving and you push the brake pedal what is happening is that the pedal valve is shutting off the supply of air to the brake chambers and the friction material (either shoes or pads) is drawn by spring pressure towards the disc or drum.
ABC brakes will leave skid marks during icy road conditions because of its slippery nature. ABS keeps brakes from locking up but does not prevent tires from sliding on ice.
Disc brakes by their very nature can be noisy due to the high heat and pressures they work in. As you depress your brake a great deal of heat is being generated and holding the brake keeps these parts from vibrating however, as you release the brake , there is enough play to allow this vibration. Chances are your brake rotors have enough wear so they can no longer absorb this heat like they could when they were new. If it is troublesome I would replase the brake rotors and pads.
It's your emergency brake switch! Call you locate dealer it doesn't cost that much
slowly push it along then pull the brakes, if it stops, THE BRAKES WORK!!! if it keeps going, THE BRAKES DON'T WORK!!! IT'S ROCKET SCIENCE!!!
