I had the same problem in my 92 and 93. Someone had messed with the ground. I think it was a white wire with a black stripe.

check the fuse for the brake lights, they have thier own. also check the brake light switch at the at the top of the brake petal

I have a 1990 Chevy 1500 truck the brakelight switch is disconnected and it has no connector going to it. I replaced all the bulbs. And still my running lights are in the on position when i turn off the truck. My brake lights are still not working after replacing the lights. I have a RV brake accuator also under the steering column can you help me solve my problem?

The 1990 Celica door will be a direct bolt on to a 1992 Celica GT. Even the Coupe model doors were the same.
Check the wire which is going inside of the trunk hood to the brake lights.
Blown bulbs, blown fuse, broken or out of adjustment brake light switch.
check the brake light switch on the brake pedal
