Historically, minority groups have been treated harshly in the United States when they first begin to arrive. In the 1800's and into the 1900's Irish Immigrants came to the United States. They were looked upon as dirty, worthless, and Un-American. However, as the Irish began to immerse themselves into the American culture, they became accepted. It may take many years for minority groups to be accepted because they are not viewed as true "Americans".
