There is no alternative size between British and American shirts. So, a size 36 in the UK is the same in the US.

Interestingly enough, the sizes are the same for men. The sizes for "continental" are stated in centimeters, giving you an idea of the dimensions. Yes, men's shirt sizes and women's shirt sizes are different. My wife wears a medium for women but a small in men's... sometimes that's too big.
American shoe sizes are a 1/2 size smaller
