God help you if the regular psychiatrist is out on vacation. On second thought, maybe that would be a GOOD thing...that is, if someone new didn't cover for him every day. Let me explain...

In Feburary of 2011, my daughter was admitted to the BMH psych unit after leaving Phoenixville Hospital. She had been admitted to Phoenixville emergency after overdosing on pills in attempted suicide (this was on the five-year anniversary of her first attempted suicide). The regular psychiatrist at BMH, Dr. "Abraham" (although after meeting him, I suspect he had changed his name from Ibrahim), was out for a week's vacation. A different psychiatrist came in every day that week to see all the patients, including my daughter. Those who came through seemed sensible/competent enough, but the situation lacked any continuity of care. The following week, Dr. "Abraham" returned. He had seen my daughter for a total of 2 days, at which point, he decided my daughter could be discharged. We picked her up on a Wednesday, after having a family conference among my daugher, her father, a young resident, Dr. "Abraham" and myself. Dr. "Abraham" had concluded that my daughter had attempted suicide and had been depressed due to neglect by her parents. I was shocked, hurt, and very upset. Our daughter had nothing but attention from her parents, and we had tried to help her with her problems for many years. When I reported what he said to our daughter's regular psychiatrist, she told me she knew that he was way out of line (because she knew me and my daughter) and said I shouldn't take that on. She was also surprised by his outdated view of the reasons for suicide and depression in young people.

MY review of the BMH Psych Unit? After being told how good it was prior to my daughter's stay, all I can say now is STAY AWAY!! Find somewhere else, perhaps Penn or Brandywine. If this kind of situation arises with my daughter again, I will certainly take her somewhere else.
