There are aspects of Buddhism that are devotional, I give praise to the Buddha and my teachers every day, primarily because they revealed the truth to me of the true nature of all phenomena.

Many things are true regarding the Buddha. You need to narrow down your question, or give some context.
The 4 special places are where the Buddha was born (April 15th lunar calendar), where the Buddha renounced his luxurious life (December 8th L.c), where the Buddha give the first teaching and where the Buddha passed away(February 8th)

Essentially everything in Buddhism is a path towards Buddhist attaining realisation, so although Buddhists give praise to the Buddha, this is a means to an ends.
Buddha was originally called Siddhartha Gautama.
While I cannot give you a sutra, I can comment on the question. When Buddha says he was a buddha before he started meditating, what he means is his buddha-nature exists here and now. However, before he became enlightened, he had forgotten it. He was not aware of it. The mind created a fog, so that he could not see his buddha-nature. Meditation is the process of clearing the fog, so that you may remember (become conscious of) that which already is.
Truth is what is real, a lie is made up.
Some one else will have your used laughing buddha. Statues are not magical. The MAJJHIMA SUTTA, for instance, clearly discounts reliance on talismans or rituals as erroneous.
