Across the Appalachian Mountains begins Bituminous coal in the geological area called the Pittsburgh Coal Seam-- - an area extending from Western Pennsylvania, Western West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Metamorphosis transforms anthracite coal, a hard coal, to Bituminous coal, a soft coal.
