I have the similar situation on my shifter on my 1991 Pontiac sunbird 2.0 Liter. The shifter was kinda loose last two year, but it shifted fine. However, 2 days ago. When I put in "Park" gear, it was still moving forward, I put in "Rear" gear, it felt like in "Park", when I put in "Drive" gear, it felt like in "neutral". And the shifter is sometimes very loose, but back to normal when I put the shifter back and forth.
I took it to a transmission store, they found out the "shift linkage cable" from the shift to the transmission was broken. I changed it today and so far no problem.
It is a small solenoid that is accutated when the brake pedal is applied allowing shifter to move. This is located at the shifter and can be heard if all is quiet shifter in park and brakes applied.
Buy a new cable
Insert key. Turn to ACC. Push brake. Push button on shifter. Move shifter out of park. It helps if park lock cable is not broken, and if vehicle is not on an incline.

If you cannot move the shifter out of the park position then you have a problem with the shifter cable or the brake safety lock. If you can move the shifter to the drive position, and it doesnt go in gear then you are a few quarts low on transmission fluid
its beside the shifter under the console. if your car is stuck in park, take off the console, and pull the shift solenoid out or engage it and then zip tie it to a bracket that doesn't move. and it will work from now on.

Try putting the shifter in neutral and try it. If not pull the shifter in to park, but pull it into park and turn key.
Make sure the shifter is all the way in park, if it is not in park, the key will not come out. You might want to wiggle the shifter to make sure it is all the way in park.

The 2001 Escape, with the gear shifter on the steering column, has an interlock solenoid located by the shifter assembly. The purpose is to lock the shifter in PARK until you depress the brake pedal. This is to prevent "sudden acceleration" where you engage the transmission with the brake off and the car shoots forward or backward. When you press the brake pedal a switch is closed that turns on the break lights and activates the solenoid, generating a magnetic field that withdraws the interlock pin, allowing you to move the shifter out of Park and into Drive or Reverse. The solenoid can make a clicking noise. We never noticed the clicking sound in our 2001 Escape until this mechanism had begun to fail, locking the shifter in Park regardless of the position of the brake pedal.
