Because of the 305's small bore, you're pretty limited. Large valve heads (2.02/1.60) won't work on a 305 because the valves will hit the block itself. If it's an older 305, your best bet would be the old power pack 283 heads. They flow better than the older 305 heads. Now, if it's a vortec engine, you probably won't do much better than what it had stock. If you are really trying to go fast, the best thing you can do is junk the 305 and replace it with a 350 or a 327.

No, a 305 would not be better than a 350. The 305 is basically a 350 block with smaller heads, and lower horsepower. You didn't state what you are looking for, mileage or horsepower. The differences in mileage I would stay with the 350 and just run a 2 barrel carb. You also have more torque which gets the car moving with the 350. You just need to keep the throttle easy when you start out to get decent gas mileage out of the 350. The 350 is also a great build project if you wanted to go larger on displacement and can go to a 383 stroker motor which will increase the torque and horsepower more. I must disagree with that last answer. Both are perfectly good engines. They simply were designed for different uses. The 305 is more than different heads. The stroke is the same on both but the 305's bore is smaller. The 305 came out in 1976 and was designed to offer good midrange power and improved fuel economy. The 305 is just now beginning to get some of the respect it deserves among builders as a potential performer by simply finding some of the stock 60cc heads produced around 1978 found on 305's (or any other high performance heads) and running a hotter cam with a proper 4 barrel intake a carb setup. I know, my 65 El Camino is so equipped and it's a screamer! And with the supply of available good older 350's beginning to decline, the lower price of the still plentiful 305's are a perfectly viable alternative. Yes, I will agree that with the exception of the 60cc head equipped 305's, most any 350 was always the better choice as equipped from the factory. But small block Chevy aftermarket parts are vast and cheap for both of these for those who want more power!

Honestly, junking the 305 and installing a 350. The 305 is basically an underbored 350. Because of it's small bore, large valve heads can NOT be used because larger diameter valves will actually hit the engine block. The 305 is a good fuel economy V-8, but it simply is NOT worth messing with if you want to go fast. 305's also have weak blocks, connecting rods and crankshafts as well. Ask any engine builder and they'll tell you the same thing. The 305 is good for what it was designed for, but for performance, it's basically junk.
