Since the anal region has relatively less blood supply, the exercise of pelvic muscles viz. anal contraction and relaxation is likely to improve the blood supply and health of the pelvic region. With this idea I practice anal contractions myself. To my satisfaction, I am free from a variety of ano-rectal and genito-urinary problems such as piles, fistula, anal fissure, proctalgia fugux (a very painful condition of anal region). However this does not prove that the exercise of anal contractions alone can prevent these problems. I also concede the importance of other measures such as drinking adequate water, including fiber in diet, moderation in life style, regular exercise and surgery when other conservative measures fail. But I think the benefits of this simple, inexpensive and safe measure of anal contractions (ASHVINI MUDRA) for about five minutes every day have to be studied, in terms of preventing or treating ano-rectal and genito-urinary problems.
