Yes sonar can be used at periscope depth. Surface ships also have sonar arrays on them. They are usually used to detect submarines.
A device called a echo sounder or sonar is used to measure the depth of the ocean using sound waves. Sound waves are emitted from the instrument and the time taken for the sound waves to bounce back from the ocean floor is used to calculate the depth.

The depth of the sea can be determined by measuring the time taken for sound waves to travel from a source to the seafloor and back to a receiver. By knowing the speed of sound in water, scientists can calculate the distance to the seafloor based on the time taken for the sound waves to return. This method is known as echo sounding or sonar.
