Why shear is not considered in design of columns?

shear is not critical in designing normal columns (3-5 meter height). but in short columns (Pedestals) around 1meter height or less, shear would be more critical rather than moment or axial force. this also happens for beams less than two meter length in moment resistant frames.

When the combined footing is generally used?

1) space outside the external column is limited by property line, pipes, ... etc. 2) Two columns are closed together and separate footing would over lab.

What is the plastic section modulus of steel section?

section modulus of any section is the ratio of the moment of inertia to the distance of extreem fibre from the neutral axis. plastic section modulus is the section modulus when the cross section is subjected to loading such that the whole section is under yield load. numerically it is equal to the pdoduct of the half the cross section area and the distance of center of gravity of tension and compression area from neutral axis

What is better circular column or rectangular column?

Columns are structural compression members which transmit loads from the upper floors to the lower levels and then to the soil through the foundations. Since columns are compression elements, failure of one column in a critical location can cause the progressive collapse of adjoining floors, and in turn, even the collapse of the entire structure. Although tied columns are most commonly used because of the lower construction costs, spirally bound circular columns are also used where increased ductility is needed, such as in earthquake zones. The ability of a spirally reinforced column to sustain the maximum load at excessive deformation prevents the complete collapse of the structure before total redistribution of moments and stresses is complete. Failure in columns could occur as a result of material failure or by loss of lateral structural stability. If a column fails due to material failure, it is classified as a short column, as opposed to the slender column whose failure is by buckling. The program generates the axial load vs. bending moment interaction diagram of an unconfined circular concrete column, with uniform arrangement of non-prestressed reinforcing bars. The program takes into account the slenderness effects.

What is the purpose of strength reduction factors and why they are smaller for columns than beams?

the purpose of strength reduction factor is used to take into account the uncertainties of material strength, inaccuracies in the design equations, approximations in analysis, possible variations in dimension's of the concrete section and placement of reinforced, the importance of member of structure of which they are part, an so on. Column is designed stronger than beam it means during strong earthquake column member remain elastic so it can provide stability and strength of the stories above.
