You can pop the linkage off at the transmission with a large screwdriver. This will allow you to operate the transmission shift selector on the transmission from park, neutral, drive and so on. The truck still has to be in park or neutral to start the engine. Chock the wheels and apply the parking brake and have someone in the drivers seat holding the brakes on while you're under there. You could easily be run over by the truck. Remember safety first!
