I am taking this question as directly to me... and I will answer yes, with my specs you can run Skyrim at ultimate quality settings running at a minimum of 90 fps. Want to know what those specs are? I will tell you, but for any other readers, please do not try this unless you wish to destroy a lot of expensive computer hardware by trial and error:

  • 800W Infinity CMS PSU. Critically essential!
  • ASUS Sabretooth 990FX board with thermal radar. AI Suite II running for thermal scanning and power boost channeling. 10% power feed to each CPU and RAM cooler units. Max temp 105F, but never gets over 70F.
  • AMD Phenom 6-core CPU, 3.76G per core overclock and 10% power boost. 6 x multithread override so that Windows does not control one core until it is fully stressed before another core becomes active.
  • Non factory Spin-Q CPU cooler.
  • ATI Radeon 5450 1G DDR5 x 2 Crossfire with 10% power boost each PCI-e. No overclock of RAM timing on GPU as they are board powered and get very hot. Both GPU running on basic Benq 22" G2220HD 16:9 LCD 60Hz.
  • 2 x 4G Kingston generic RAM with 5% power boost per stick.
  • Non factory generic RAM cooler.
  • 2 x 140mm and 2 x 80mm case fans.
  • Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with only 2 background apps on startup, AI Suite II and Avast AV scanner.
  • Skyrim 4GHelper to maximize game preload buffer, saves load times.

I built the system myself for under AU$800, but I need an upgrade as most of these parts are over 2 years old and games are becoming more demanding. It would be nice to have a system that didn't need to be overclocked, power channeled and super cooled, though I would probably still overkill in that department.
