Does a PS2 play PS1 and PS3?

Best Answer

no, absolutely not,

here is why:

the size of the ps3 game CD is about 20 gb or so but the one for the ps2 games is 800 kb or 1200 kb max, u can realixe this from the memory card because it is only 8000 kb,so how can a console that plays cds that have 20 gb space play a game that only has 800 kb of space

- some people say that there is an update that allows you to play ps2 games on the ps3 but it is impossible to have the same graphics

The game disc fits fine. The PS3 has no problem playing the smaller file size on select PS1 titles. The Game software is different and you can download some PS1 titles from the PlayStation store to play on the PS3. The PS3 was made to play PS2 games and they had difficulties and stopped making those consoles. Only the early 4 USB port machines will play some of the PS2 titles. There is nothing you can do to get the ability to play PS2 games for the newer machines

yes - the old 'fat' PS3 20G, 60G, and 80G model number "CECHE01″ can play PS2 games. (none of these models are still in production)

All of the current PS3 being sold will not play PS2 games.

Out of the many versions of the PlayStation 3 console, ONLY the 60GB model is capable of playing any PlayStation 2 or PS1 games. incorrect the 20 GB and 1st 80 GB model could also play the PS2 games

Other versions, such as the 40GB or 80GB models, cannot play PS1 or PS2 games whatsoever. except the 4USB port 80 GB model

The 60GB version can play MOST PS2 or PS1 games, but some still have compatability issues. If you have a specific game you wish to play, do a quick Google search like " PS3 compatibility" to see if anyone has any information on it.

Actually you can play ps2 and ps1 games on all the ps3s no matter how much gb they have. i have a 40gb ps3 and i play both ps1 and ps2 games on it all the time. But to play ps2 games on it, you would have to go to the PlayStation Store and download the free content to play ps2 games. Not True and there are no downloads and here is a quote from Sony PlayStation related link "If a PlayStation 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications."

muffin1379@live.com says:

Well the PS3 does not suck, its actually better than any other console out at the moment. Blu-ray player, divx/wma codec, rip CDs in multiple formats, more hit games, free internet and web browser, faster loading speed on games, etc, (I could go on all day). There is a lot of opinions out there. Also, to answer the initial question: All of the original PS3's can play PSX and PS2 games. The newer ones can not. They can be told apart because the original ones have 4 USB ports

The 20 GB PS3 could play PS2 games and so could the 60 GB model that was released with it and those machines are called the first generation PS3 Models. The second Generation PS3 model were the 60 GB Model and the 80 GB model and while they could play the PS2 games it was based on Partially software-based PS2 emulation while the earlier models were Hardware-based PS2 emulation. These 1st and 2nd generation PS3 models all included 4 USB ports and also had Flash memory card readers. The 3rd generation of PS3 models had the 40 GB, the 80 GB, and the 160 GB Harddrives but only 2 USB ports and do not play PS2 games with backward compatibility. The fourth Generation of PS3s are the 120 GB and 250 GB PS3 slim model which do not play PS2 games with Backward Compatibility.

All PS3 models play PlayStation 1 Games and do so through software emulation.

Also there is nothing that you can download to play PS2 games on your PS3. The second Generation PS3 models did have a Partially Software Based PS2 emulation, but the key word is Partially as hardware was also involved. The PlayStation Store selling something that will allow you to play PS2 games on your PS3 is a myth.

Sadly, the Playstation 2 can only play Playstation 1&2 games and not Playstation 3 games because the system hasn't and won't have a way to update it's gaming software needs. The Playstation 3 and games that tag along with it have higher qualities for viewing and sound ambience. You can play Playstation 1&2 games on the Playstation 2 but you cannot play Playstation 3 games on a Playstation 2.

Only the first PS3, the 60GB version. They no longer sell these in normal stores, but you can buy them on eBay and similar places for about two times the price of a normal PS3.

Think about it, if people could play PS3 games on a PS1 or PS2 then why not buy a ps1 for 5 dollars and play the ps3 games on it? To answer your question, no you can't but you can play PS2 games on your PS3 now sure about PS1 you might be able to. You also can not purchase a new PS3 and play PS2 games on it and have not been able to for years. Only the old 4 USB port models could play PS2 games and then it was not every title game available back in 2006 0r 2007.
