Prednisone is an immunosuppressant used to treat autoimmune, inflammatory, and kidney diseases. Using prednisone on animals has been tested and is said to be beneficial; it is one of the drugs often used for treatment of autoimmune diseases in dogs. Some of the most common uses of prednisone are:
* Alleviation of Asthma and other Allergies * Treating kidney disorders * Treatment of excessive itching * Controlling rejections during organ transplants Of course, it also comes with its side-effects:
* Abnormal thirst levels and excessive hunger * Ulcers in the digestive tract * Renal disorders * Diabetes * Pain and inflammation in the pancreas * Muscle Degeneration * Unpredictable changes in behavior As with any drug, a visit to the vet is suggested before administration.
Yes; I have a small dog and she is on prednisone for vestibular disorder. She suddenly has a huge appetite, whereas before she had to be hand fed as I was afraid she would starve herself. Now with the prednisone treatment she eats and drinks like it's going out of style. Her belly is very full and large from over stuffing herself. I had to remove her dish before she bursts. THis behaviour only came about on the second day of being given the prednisone.
You need to call your veterinarian and tell him/her that your dog is not eating after being put on prednisone - your vet may need to adjust the medication level or advise alternate food options.
Hunger.
I used to get my dog's prednisone filled at the drug store.
This will depend greatly on why your dog was started on prednisone. If the prednisone was for a temporary condition, like getting an itchy skin under control, your dog should be weaned off the prednisone within a couple months at most. However, prednisone is also prescribed to treat Cushings disease, which is a permanent condition that requires medication for the rest of the dog's life.
Yes
There is no set dose for an 8 pound dog; veterinarians typically prescribe within a certain range based upon the dog's symptoms and what the prednisone is being used to treat. Prednisone is a powerful drug with the potential for serious side effects, particularly in such a small dog. If you believe your dog needs treatment with prednisone, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination.
Just went to the vet and he switched our dog from duramax to prednisone. They DO NOT mix well. Doing so can severely hurt your dog.
i am weaning my dog off prednisone the vet order clavamox also baytril for his ear infection
Should I stop taking chlorpheniramine if I am now taing prednisone.
Yes they can but have to be weaned off of the prednisone very slowly. This should only be done under your Veterinarian's care. Why is the dog on prednisone in the first place? Some serious diseases & cancers require the dog be on the pred for a long time. This is why this should all be done under your Vet's care.
is the dog in heat?
When giving Prednisone to your dog they have to slowly be taken off of the medication. Do not abruptly stop giving this medication to your pet as it will have serious side effects.
