Excellent Question. Smart Cars get such good gas mileage because of their size, and because of an air-metal interface lubricant they are drenched in. It's microns thick, or more accurately: thin, and is quite sturdy against air, dust, touch of the hands, rain and snow. However, a solution has never been found to develop a resistance to a sponge and soap that is used in most car washes. If a smart car were to be washed, it's air-metal interface lubricant would soon oxidize and cause the fuel economy of this vehicle to plummet. Studies have shown that the result is something around 2 to 3 mpg, which would be quite a hefty dent in ones pocketbook. Fortunately, a reapplication of the lubricant is available, but can be quite expensive in some locations, ranging anywhere from 300 to 400 pounds. This of course depends on the availability of this space age lubricant and the commodities market. I hope that this has been as interesting and as eye opening for you as it has for me! Stay away from those car washes!
