Both Valium and Xanax are highly addictive members of the benzodiazepine family. Because they are anti-seizure medications in addition to their tranquilizing capacaties, withdrawal is likely to involve lowering of the seizure threshold in a backlash reaction, and life-threatening seizures and blood pressure spikes are possible.

All benzodiazepine detox should be supported medically by people who are trained in the specific protocols for that class of drugs. Withdrawal symptoms can include agitation, restlessness, and sometimes hallucinations and other CNS symptoms.

Yes - both have similar properties. You would want to find an adequate dose to cover the Xanax. There are many people who argue the equivalency of Xanax compared to Valium. I would say that 1mg of Xanax is equivalent to 10mg Xanax, maybe less (5mg). Now, you could be taking 3mg Alprazolam daily and use only 15mg of Diazepam and abruptly stop the Alprazolam. The most important thing is, your risk of seizures will be stopped by the Dizepam. Sure you may feel uncomfortable, but never stop cold turkey without going onto something else that will prevent seizures. Many doctors use Neurontin, an anti-epileptic with some very mild anxiolytic (calming) effects to quickly get you off the Benzo. I think this is wrong, and a slow taper should be used, using similar medications! Sorry for the rambling

in some detox rehabs they use valium to detox from xanax, and in some rehabs they use klonopin, and in some rehabs they use librium, some rehabs do the tapering process, and in some rehabs they just use vitamin suppliments,if i were an addiction specialist i would try to use other anti anziety medications that were strong and that would help them sleep well at night, along with anti convulsants, along with anti vertigo medications, diareahha medications that stop the cramping and diareahha, and give it 10 days for their brain to began to function normally again, maybe 14 days,if that didnt work ide ask the patient do u need more time here if so your welcome to stay,if not then if they have to go back to the medication or another benzodiazapam such as klonopin, klonopin isnt as bad as xanax, ive been on both.
