yes, it can work however your going to need the engine, transmission, ecu, wiring harness, and bcm, and someone who knows how to fabricate new engine mounts and trans mounts, its quite a costly engine swap, but with lots of money and time just about anything can be done

It should fit if both cars had that engine from the factory. If the 1996 was a Z24 (2.4L), then there will be differences - most likely with engine electronics. Hope this helps!
