The motto of the wise is, beware of surprises- Charles Chan. Okay this might be a side-effect of the Bears" cold climate, lower metabolism rates ( sleep it off on an ice floe in the winter- watch out for Coast Guard gunnery practice!) Kidding aside sound travels better at frigid temperatures- the speed ( Mach Factor I- 760 Miles per Hour at sea level) is the same- as this is Mach"s Constant. -but the reception is clearer over a longer distance. A few years ago I could hear some Church bells on Central avenue on a cold December day- almost a mile from their point of Origin. Also one gets better photographs in the winter as there is no ( Ground clutter)- vegetation has faded, and one can see further, and the atmosphere is more stable - also cold inhibits motion so one has a smooth let-off minimizing camera shake. all of this could apply to the Polar Bear. No animal can see in the absence of light. Some animals are adapted to using very low levels of light to see (cats, owls etc.) bears fall into this category. Bear's eyes have a reflective layer called the "tapetum lucidum" lining the back of the eyeball. This layer reflects light back through the retina, allowing light to stimulate light-sensitive cells in the retina a second time, thereby improving night vision.
