The first test they will do is an EEG which measures the electrical activity in the brain. If one or more abnormal brain waves appears, that is usually the trigger point(s) of the seizures. Other tests that are used are MRI and CT scan. These give an even better picture of the brain.

EEG studies are used to monitor brain wave activity. It can detect abnormalities in such brain waves. So it can be used to detect epilepsy. However, epilepsy is diagnosed when someone has recurring seizures. It is possible that someone can have unusual activity, but not have any seizures. So normally people will have had seizures before having a EEG study. The EEG study can help to find where the problem may lie.

Epilepsy has a wide range of causes and comes in different forms. An EEG is one of the methods used to help in the diagnosis of epilepsy, but there are other things, like an MRI, a doctor's examination and the information the patient or someone who has seen them have what they think is a seizure can give. Together they will be used to diagnose it.
