Need to know what you are working on. Year, engine size and what it is in.
You will need to ask your question again with that info. Thank you.
The water pump will pump coolant(antifreeze & water) through the engine after the thermostat opens up.
Always use antifreeze. Water does not have any water pump lubricants or anti corrosion properties, antifreeze coolant does.
It is possible that the antifreeze is coming from a bad water pump. Clean the engine off. Watch it to see where the antifreeze is leaking from, as it could be a hose instead of the pump.
bad water pump
Usually a leaking hose into or out of the water pump (depending on its location), or the water pump gasket.
yes, leaking coolant is what happens before the pump totally dies, then you have overheating and possible engine damage soon after the leaking.
Yes, it can.
That alone won't do it. The risks of just running water are that it won't thaw out quickly enough to cool the engine, and that can cause overheating. The other risk is that, if you just run water, you're supposed to add a lubricant to it to lube the water pump... not doing this can cause your water pump to go back, then you run into overheating issues because of that pump not working.
Yes, antifreeze can leak from a water pump gasket.
A water pump is not really a water pump. It carries the fluid, antifreeze/coolant, from the the reservoir to the radiator/engine to keep it cool. It is now referred to as a "fluid pump"
I am sure you have a v8 engine----if so the water pump weep hole will leak antifreeze and show up running down the lower rad hose on the water pump side ---of course there are other places antifreeze can leak at the front of the engine such as the water pump mounting gasket----the lower left (drivers side) p ump mounting bolt---as it enters the water jacket--- the timing caver gasket and the intake manifold gasket but the pump is the most likely place
Radiator or hose but probably water pump
