For a 5 channel set up, I would recommend putting two speakers in the back and two speakers in the front. Then place the subwoofer anywhere in the room.
As long as the boombox you have is equipped with this feature, you can set it up. Panasonic, Sharp mini Systems, Sony and GPX are just a few brands that offer this feature in their boomboxes.
6.1 is the same as a 5.1 set-up - Front left and right, front middle, subwoofer and rear left and right but 6.1 offers one more speaker at the rear in the center. 7.1 will give you a much better audio experience, as with the 5 .1 one set-up but with a two additional speakers in the middle middle of the room with 2 x speakers on the left and right.

You can get a wind up radio for outages.
6.5" speakers. The 8 speakers, as someone else quoted, are two sets of 6.5" in front, and a set in the back, plus tweeters up front. Not sure if the speakers are ran off a factory crossover, or how they have it hooked up. I'll rip into mine tomorrow, but those are the speakers that should be there. The GT is the 6-speaker setup.
