No, you should never ride without the engine cap, even for a short amount of time, when the car is overheating. Just park the car for about 20 minutes and see if that helps. Add water if needed.

When a car is moving, more air is being pushed through the radiator because of its forward motion. That extra air removes more heat from the coolant, which in turn can absorb more heat from the engine. When a car stops, so does the extra air. If the radiator can't provide sufficient cooling under those circumstances, then the engine will overheat. You may have a faulty fan clutch, damaged or missing fan shroud or leave debris restricting air flow.
