Although the Q400 is based on the preceding 100/200/300, it has a completely different avionics package with full glass cockpit, longer fuselage and more powerful engines compared to 100/200/300. Going from 100 to 300 will have minor limitation differences due to longer fuselage and more powerful engines however cockpit appearance is practically identical. In either case, pilots need to train on the appropriate series of aircraft they intend on flying. each country and operator have their own rules but can you ask a 300 series dash 8 pilot to jump in the Q400 and see if he can fly it? He probably could.
you pilot a plane
Technically a pilot is anyone who has flown an airplane. In the USA, there are several different levels of pilot certificates. They go:Student Pilot Certificate (can fly solo with a flight instructor signoff)Private Pilot Certificate (can fly with passengers, not for hire)Commercial Pilot Certificate (can fly for hire)Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (can fly as a captain for charter and airline operations)So a "pilot" is not necessarily better or worse than a private pilot.
