yes
A godparent sponsor needs to be baptized Catholic, Confirmed, and in good standing with the Church and in harmony with the faith we profess. If divorced, that is OK, but if remarried without an annulment it is problematic

Roman Catholic AnswerThat depends. The Godparent in a baptism is very important. They must be firm believers and must be able and ready to help the newly baptized - child or adult - on the road of Christian life. (Cf. Codex Iuris Canonici, cann. 872-874) Their task is a truly ecclesial function (officium). (Cf. Sacrosanctum concilium 67). Exercepted from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 1255.

In other words, the Godparent must be a practicing Catholic, and in a state of grace. If the Godparent is divorced, normally this is not a problem if they were the innocent party and are still in good standing with the Church. You should check with the pastor.

Can someone not baptised attend a Catholic church?

No, to be a Godparent at a Catholic baptism one must be a baptized and practicing Catholic. However, you may also have another sponsor in addition to the Catholic Godparent. That second person does NOT have to be Catholic. Technically, they probably don't need to be christened, but what would be the point of having someone be a Godparent who does not believe in Christ?

Do protestants have godparents?

The role of the godparent is to assist the parents in bringing up their children in the practice of the Catholic Faith. Therefore to be eligible to be a "godparent" it is necessary that the person be a practicing catholic. A Protestant may be a "Christian Witness" but may not serve in the capacity of godparent in the Baptism ceremony. There must be at least one person who serves as a godparent.

Can a child be baptized a Catholic if their godmother is not Catholic?

No, because a Godparent's purpose is to help assure that the child is raised as a Catholic. If the Godparent is not a Catholic there is no assurance that this responsibility will be complied with by the non-Catholic person.

Can a non-Catholic Christian be a Godparent?

No. Your sponsorship is your endorsement of the ceremony. Since Catholics believe that the fullness of the truth is in the teachings of the Catholic Church, sponsoring a non-Catholic baptism would mean you are allowing a loved one to be raised without the fullness of the truth. Therefore, all Catholics shouldn't be a sponsor at a non-Catholic baptism. The proper thing for a Catholic to do is to express that you are happy they are entering into the Christian faith but remark that the Catholic Church is the only Christian church founded by Jesus and therefore, they remain a separated brother or sister from the church unless they become Catholic. Remember, the key is to love them with a Christ-like love. That means being honest and telling them the truth. Not to give a watered down consent for a ceremony that will not bring them into full union with Christ's Church.

Is baptism when a person is made catholic?

Baptism can be for other Christian faiths, not just Catholic. So if you are becoming a Christian, you are baptised.

Can you make someone who is dead a godparent of your child?

No. The person/persons who is/are to be the godparent/godparents must be living in order to participate in the Rite of Baptism. Also, a godparent's duty is to help the parents instruct their child in the Catholic faith, help them grow spiritually, and to pray for them. All of these requirements can only be met when the person is living.`The godparent of the newly baptized person (adult, child, infant) has different honorary responsibilities depending on their religious faith. A Catholic and other Christian churches (Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Congregational, etc) have certain things set as guidelines. Other religions that I am not familiar with also have similar persons in place according to their baptisms or dedications of the baptized person.A god parent is different than being a legal guardian, although years ago, it was considered the same structure.A godparent is the same thing as a SPONSOR.But the bottom line answer is YOU MUST BE ALIVE AT THE TIME OF THE BAPTISM, DEDICATION, ETC.By the way, your baptismal certificate IS a legal documentation, so put it with your birth certificate (if you have one printed).

Can a Catholic be a godparent to a Baptist baby?

No. Canon Law states that a non-Catholic may stand up at the baptism like a godparent would as a witness to the baptism, but only if the other godparent is a Catholic. The other requirements for godparents are:having the intention of adequately fulfilling the role as godparent.the godparent must be at least 16 years old, unless otherwise specified by the diocesan bishop or unless the parish priest "considers that there is a just reason for an exception to be made."be a Catholic who has received the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.may not be the mother or father of the person being baptized."not labour under a canonical penalty, whether imposed or declared."Canon Law also gives a list of stipulations which would disqualify a person from being a godparent:if the person does not intend on fulfilling their role and duties as godparent.if the person is younger than age 16 (or younger than the age the diocesan bishop has stated).if the person is not Catholic.if the person has not received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist in the Catholic faith.if the person does not live according to Catholic teachings (ex. uses birth control, doesn't go to Mass, is pro-choice, etc).if the person is a nun, priest, or other religious (because it would not allow them to fulfill the commitment as godparent adequately).if the person is the husband/wife of the person getting Baptized.if the person is the parent of the person getting Baptized.if "the person has incurred an official excommunication or 'latae sententiae,' by the very commission of the offense. (ex. involved in one or more abortions.)"if the person is a member of a society condemned by the Church (ex. Free Masons)if "the person is a public sinner. (ex. prostitution, living common-law.)"if "the person is a heretic."if "the person belongs to a schism. 'Schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.' (C.C.C. # 2089)"if the person doesn't belong to a specific parish, not belonging to any specific faith.if "the person is involved in a mix-marriage and believes his/her children should choose their own religion when they grow up."if "the person believes that all religions are equal or that other religions are equal to the Catholic Church."if "the person is involved in an invalid marriage. (Example: Justice of the Peace, marriage outside the Church.)"

Can a single Catholic man marry in a Presbyterian church a woman who is non Catholic and divorced?

Roman Catholic AnswerA person who is divorced under civil law is still considered married in the eyes of God, so no, a Catholic (or any serious Christian) would not consider marrying a divorced person as that person is already married.

Do Baptists have Godparents at baptisms?

No. The Baptist church doesn't have infant baptism where the function of godparents is to speak for the child. As the person to be baptized in a Baptist church must be able to have decided for themselves on following Christ and receiving baptism, they don't have godparents to speak for them.

When do Catholics become Catholic?

A person is a Catholic from the minute that he is born, if he is born into a Catholic family, or when he first starts studying for Baptism. An adult in RCIA (the program for adult converts) would be buried in a Catholic cemetery if he died before Baptism.

Can a gay person be a godparent?

Where "godparent" is recognized by a faith community, check with your local pastor. In civil society, the choice of a godparent is entirely up to the parents.

What is baptism of blood in the Catholic Church?

Baptism of blood refers to martyrdom. A person who through no fault of their own has not been baptized but dies for the Faith will be saved anyway.
