A fat goldfish is unhealthy, and the reason for the fattness of some goldfish is because of over-feeding. Though a goldfish owner may think that their goldfish are really hungry because they eat everything the owner puts in, a goldfish will really eat anything as mcuh as it can like it is really hungry. The biggest mistake goldfish owners do is overfeeding their poor goldfish. I always give my goldfish one day of fasting per week, but a fasting day isn't necesarry when you feed it the right, small amount.

∙ 14y agoNo. All fish will stop eating when they have had enough. When people talk about over feeding fish they are referring to left over food being allowed to sink to the bottom of the tank/container and the resultant poisoning of the water which kills the fish. The best way to avoid this is to feed fish only as much as they will eat in 15mins. Any left overs should be removed.
