Some manufacturers used to serialise all major parts on guns. In a revolver this would mean the frame, barrel & cylinder would all be serialised. A gun with different numbers could of had a part replaced resulting in mixed numbers. A lot of old Colt revolvers are seen with mixed numbers. Per federal law the number on the frame is the correct serial number for the gun. In this case it would be the number on the butt.
