On the face of your question, yes. It would be illegal for a twelve year old to possess a large knife. In fact, it would be against the law for someone over 18 to possess a concealed large knife. One would need a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) permit to lawfully carry a large knife.

If the knife is on the inside of the pocket, it is concealed and must follow concealed carry laws. if it is on the outside, it is open carry. As long as it's lawful, you can carry it either way. I personally carry the knife on the inside of my pocket.
