Certainly, that is their job. It is one of the cornerstones of the American justice system, attorneys defending every individual to the best of their abilities.

For example, if a client is found guilty, he may get more or less punishment, depending on a variety of circumstances. It is the attorney's job in this case to try to find these favorable circumstances.

Yes everyone has the right to an attorney. A lawyer has a duty to the adversarial system to be sure that all individuals are represented and that the prosecution cannot take shortcuts in the process.

Added: Whether they will be able to "help" them is open not only to interpretation of what is meant by "help," and the attorney's skill.

If you were at court and plead not guilty so you could get a lawyer and didnt end up getting one is it possible to plead not guilty twice and then come back a third time with a lawyer please help?

No. If you pled not guilty but were not granted a Public Defender, you would be given an opportunity (called a "continuance") to obtain counsel. When you came back with counsel they could either continue your plea of not guilty and prepare to defend you or (after consulting with you) plead you guilty and attempt to obtain the best terms possible.
