If a star was "too close" to a black hole, that star would be captured by the black hole's gravity and be pulled into it.
To get pulled into a black hole, you must be within the black hole's event horizon, the point of no return. Otherwise, you will still be able to escape the black hole's gravity, if you traveled fast enough.
