Without a large intestine? Possibly, but that person would have a colostomy bag attached to their side for the rest of their life. Without a small intestine? That's more difficult but possible. Most of the nutrients we need to stay alive are extracted during the food's passage through our small intestine. But there are medical methods to deal with this. See the related question below for how they can live without a small intestine.

It is difficult but possible to live without a stomach and a small intestine. See the related question below for how someone can live without a small intestine. The same applies if they would also be without a stomach, although a pouch would usually be created from the stump of the stomach or other GI tissue to act as the stomach in that case. Severely obese people who have gastric bypass (stomach bypass) or banding or stapling of the stomach for weight loss do without much if any stomach, what is left holds only approximately 2 - 3 ounces of liquid. The stomach helps break down food, for proper nutrition, but foods can be obtained (liquids) that contain all needed nutrients ready for absorption. In addition, there is TPN (total parenteral nutrition), which is a process using a sterile solution of all necessary nutrients to support life that is administered through the blood vessels and provides the required vitamins, minerals and all other nutrients for life without having to pass through the gastrointestinal tract.

no a person can not live without a small intestine because the function of a small intestine is to break down foods and absorb nutrients and also you cannot llive without a small intestine because it is part of an organ system if you take it out what will carry out its function and replace it

Technically yes. However, since the small intestine is where nutrients are absorbed, a person with no small intestine will not live for long without intravenous "feeding".

Can you get intestines transplant?

If you mean, "can you live without your large intestine?" then yes, you can. One must wear a Colostomy bag to collect the waste that leaves the small intestine. The large intestine also plays a small role in reabsorbing water and ions, so one would have to make sure they are not getting dehydrated or experiencing symptoms of low ion concentrations. If you mean "with only small intestine -- no stomach, etc.", then no, you cannot.

There is no transplant for Crohn's disease. (The large intestine is never transplanted since you can live without it. The small intestine can be transplanted, but it does not cure Crohn's disease).

Side effects of removing the large intestine?

The removal of a person's large intestine is called a "colectomy". When it is removed, the end of the small intestine (where the large intestine would normally be joined on to) is then bought to the outside surface of the person's abdomen (normally next to the navel), where it is stitched in place and a colectomy bag is then attached to collect waste material. (Yes, the colectomy bag is outside the person's body). A person can live quite healthily without a large intestine - it is not necessary for life, just useful.

What does the small intestine do in the human body?

The digestion and the absorption of nutrients. You can live without a large intenstine, but not without a small intestine! The small intestine is responsible for most of your food digestion and all of your food absorption. The duodenum is the first section and is about a foot long. It digests all types of food (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) with the help of pancreatic juices. The duodenum, along with the jejunem and the ileum, absorb the nutrients from the digested food and transfer them into the blood stream. You can live without your stomach, but you cannot live without your small intestines.
