Backward compatibility will be available with all HD DVD players, allowing users to have a single player in their homes to play all types of HD DVD, DVD and CD discs. There is also a hybrid HD DVD format which contains both DVD and HD DVD versions of the same movie on a single disc, providing smoother transition for the studios in terms of publishing movies, and letting consumers with only DVD drives still use the discs. DVD disc replication companies can continue using their current production equipment with only minor alterations when changing over to the format of HD DVD replication. Due to the structure of the single-lens optical head, both red and blue laser diodes can be used in smaller, more compact HD DVD players. (source in related links)

To play a HD DVD you need a HD DVD player. A standard DVD player will not play a HD DVD, nor will a Blu-ray player. HDMI is just a connection: it won't give your standard DVD player superpowers.
No, it cannot. Regular DVD player uses a red laser to read disc, while HD DVD uses a blue laser, which is more precise. That's the reason HD DVD can store about 25gb of data. while DVD only around 9gb max. Blu Ray can store over 50gb.

No you can play normal DVD's but the picture would be alot better if you did buy HD DVD's.

Yes, Blu Ray dvd players do play regular dvds, but, unfortunately, if you want HD then you cannot play it on the Blu Ray. So you can be limited on choices.
I'm not ENTIRELY sure, But, Since the HD-DVD player requires the small wavelength of a blue lazer to read the disk, I'm assuming that normall DVD players won't play HD-DVD's. I have never tried it though.
* No you cannot, you need an HD-DVD player to play HD-DVD's * * HD-DVD is a brand of high definition DVD, just like "Sony" is a brand of electronics. Since an HD-DVD is its own brand and competes with Blu-Ray, the other brand of high definition DVD, it is proprietary and can only be played on HD-DVD brand DVD players. An upconverting DVD player is a DVD player that takes standard definition DVD's (in 480p) and uses digital technology to upconvert them to a 1080i or 1080p definition.
