SGI members and non-members disagree. Non-members wonder how reciting the name of the Lotus Sutra can do any good, any more than repeating the name of a book on math can teach you algebra. But any act, performed regularly and with good intention will help focus your mind and remove your thoughts from attachments. I know people who say it worked for them.
She claims she is a Nichiren Buddhist. She was introduced to this by her husband, Orlando Bloom, who is a Nichiren Buddhist as well.
There is at least one (myself) and my guess is there will be others. A large number of independent Nichiren Buddhist practitioners post on the Nichiren segment of the following online Buddhist forum www.lioncity.net/Buddhism/index.php?showforum=28
Nichiren Buddhists believe basically in the same concepts of the Buddhism in General, such as Karma, Cause and Effect, life after death (Samsara), the Wisdom of the Buddha and so on. Nichiren Buddhists also believe that to be a Buddhist, One must take refugee in the Three Jewels, which are : The Buddha, The Dharma (Buddhist Law) and the Sangha ( Buddhist Community which may or not have a clergy; it indicates actually a group of buddhist people). What then can be the difference between Nichiren Buddhists and the other schools of Buddhism? Nichiren (1222- 1282) believed that The Lotus Sutra (Saddharma Pundarika Sutra) was the highest Sutra preached by the Buddha. The reason for that is that the Lotus Sutra teaches that ever being has the Budhahood (Buddha Nature). Even women and very evil people (icchantika), to whom the Enlightenment was denied in the previous Sutras. Nichiren Buddhists believe the other sutras, being preached by the Buddha himself, cannot lie. So, why do they deny the attainment of Budhahood for women and evil people? Because, Nichiren says, it was a Skillfull Mean (Upaya) to lead his disciples to different levels of Buddhist practice until one day they could finally receive the preaching of the Lotus Sutra - the ultimate reason and cause why Buddha himself got enlightened to. Nichiren Buddhits also believe in the Gohonzon - which is a scroll with Chinese and Sanksrit writings. Nichiren said that those who embraced the Gohonzon (which contains the message and spirit of the Lotus Sutra) and chanted Nam myoho renge kyo ( the title of the Lotus sutra) could achieve Budhahood in this life. Nichiren Buddhists nowadays have many different groups. Some of them have a clergy, some are just lay groups. The largest lay group nowadays is Soka Gakkai International (SGI). Among the groups with clergy there are many, such as: Honmon Butsuryu, Nichiren Shu, Nichiren Shoshu and others.
The number of people who practice Nichiren's Buddhism depends upon whether you're counting the Soka Gakkai/Soka Gakkai International or Nichiren Shoshu. within the SGI is in 192+ countries/territories around the world I'm unsure of the exact number of members. I have no idea about Shoshu as I am not affilliated with them.
It honestly depends on what kind of Buddhist you are, but even then I don't think there's a specific diet that buddhists follow. I'm a Nichiren Daishonin Buddhist, and an SGI-USA youth, from my 4 years of being in the practice I haven't known anyone to talk about a diet. :) But we do feed off hardship, and try to produce happiness to world around us. I hope this helps somehow.
