The sling is used on an unmended fracture not merely to support the arm but also to keep the patient from using his or her arm as it is normally used. Once the fracture begins to mend the physician usually will allow the patient to discontinue the use of the sling but it can be used if the arm hurts and it feels more comfortable in the sling.
