Is there a cure for alcoholism?

No it cannot be cured only treated. For a person to beat any addiction requires support. Support from family and loved ones. Support from a 12 step program. Many experts still believe it is impossible to get over addiction without the 12 steps.

The only true prevention for Alcoholism is abstinence. If someone is genetically predisposed to acohol and they choose to drink, they have no control over weather or not they will become addicted. Knowing that absinance is unrealistic, the most important thing is awareness. Much of the pain of alcoholism can be avoided if one is aware of the early warning signs of alcohol abuse and takes immediate action when symptoms are present. They can stop drinking. An alcoholic will always be an alcoholic, but he or she can still make a choice for sobriety every day.

Sadly, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, and there is no cure for it. Meaning, once they do stop drinking, they can never again have another drink, not even "just one". With an alcoholic, there is no such thing as "just one", that's why they are alcoholics. But it can be treated, as can many diseases. And that's what alcoholism is - a disease. Far too often, there is a stigma attached to alcoholics, which makes them reluctant to seek help; they are embarassed, guilty and ashamed, and even try to keep their alcoholism secret. But the only shame in alcoholism would be in not getting help for it, since it is a disease.

If one had any other disease, such as cancer, depression, Diabetes, etc., they would seek medical assistance and/or counseling. It should be no different with alcoholism, because it is no different - it's a disease, but it is treatable, provided the person *wants* the life saving and life changing treatment. They have to want it; you cannot force an alcoholic to get treatment.

The first (and hardest step) is for the alcoholic to admit they are an alcoholic, and to stop drinking. But there are treatments, medications and methods, as well as counseling to help with that, and ways to help an alcoholic stay clean and sober once they do get sober.

If you have a loved one that is an alcoholic, you have to resolve to not be an enabler. That means you do not assist them in their drinking, nor do you accept excuses for it. Let them know you love them, and will support them in their recovery (recovery is a lifelong process), but you will not accept their drinking any longer. You can contact your local AA (Alcoholics Annonymous), which will help you plan an intervention for your loved one, and will help not only the alcoholic, but provide counseling to you and your family, as well.

If you are an alcoholic, please, realize what you are doing to your life, and the lives of all who love you. Alcoholism has no "cure", but once you take that first step and admit you are an alcoholic, and seek medical help to stop drinking and counseling to help you stay sober, your life can be far better than you ever imagined it could be.

To answer your question, yes drug & alcohol addiction can be cured. It takes a lot of love & patience to help the person who is addicted to drugs. However, I overcome it myself by saying no I have to stop or I will die. There are treatment facilities that are there to help as well, but can cost a lot of money. I went the easy way by depending on my friends & family for support & mostly depending on God for strength to get past it. Good luck in your recovery.

Alcoholism is a progressive and potentially fatal disease. Alcoholism itself is not curable but it is possible to recover completely (ie treatable). Recovering from alcohol is to abstain from all forms of Alcoholic Beverages and medications that contain alcohol such as cough medicines.

Alcohol is not the problem with the alcoholic....the person themselves are the problem. Facing ones self is an awesome task. Alcoholics drink because they are selfish and self centered. I was a drunk for 42 years and through AA I learned that I was the problem not booze.

(One further observation. Alcohol is but a symptom of the drinkers problem and yes you can recover form being a drunk but not from alcoholism the disease)

Yes, there is. Most of it involves time and thinking, and some moral support from others. All I know are the steps in the Big Book. Are there any additional methods?

Yes dont drink. Or limit your drinking to 1-3 times a month.
