That is the "turn your engine off RIGHT NOW and go look at it" light. Officially it's the alternator light; if the alternator stops putting out voltage it comes on. The usual reason VW alternators stop putting out voltage is the drive belt breaks. On the other end of the alternator shaft from the belt is your cooling fan...and as hot as these engines run, if that belt breaks your motor will melt in about a minute.
unbolt it, take the belt off, take the wires off the alternator and replace with new alternator.
take the belt off the alternator and take out the 3 bolts that hold the alternator to the engine and unplug the wires that plug into it and you have it off.
If the alternator is working properly then it should go off onec the engine has started. If it does not then you probably have afaulty alternator.
It's behind the big bracket with the water lines running through it and behind all the belts. Pulling the alternator will give you room to work. BE CAREFUL pulling the bracket off! It breaks easily. No, the regulator in the alternator only regulates when the alternator is charging (alternator must be rotating).
The inverter isn't run off the alternator... it's run off the battery. The alternator simply recharges the battery.
Check out autozone.com which has online repair manuals. The manual (which is almost a copy of chilton's manual) says to rotate the tensioner and pull off the belt before removing the alternator.
Dead easy, take drive belt off power steering pump. Slacken off alternator's two 13mm nuts, push down on spring loaded alternator, take off alternator belt, put on alternator belt. Reverse process. Job done
