Every ancestor must be or have been a parent. Ancestors are those people who had children, who in turn had children, etc., eventually resulting in the people whose ancestors they are.

What is an ancestress?

An ancestor is someone from whom you are directly descended. Your parents, their parents (your grandparents), your great-grandparents, etc... are all ancestors. Your ancestor is someone you are directly descended from. That would be your parents, your grandparents, great grandparents, etc. Ancestry, however, may also reffer to our bloodline, as far as it can be traced. If we choose to go beyond family, and into species, we are talking about Homo sapiens, whose dna has been traced back to hominids, who go back arround 4.000.000 years, or more.

What do you call your mother's cousin's niece?

It will depend on whether you share a common ancestor (is the niece's parent also a cousin?). If you do not, you are technically not related. If you do (you both have the same grandparents) you would be second cousins.

Is a blood related aunt considered a member of your immediate family?

A niece is the daughter of your brother or sister and therefore has at least one grandparent who is also your ancestor. Sharing an ancestor, you are blood relatives - to the extent that term has any real meaning. (Remember, we share DNA, not blood, with our relatives.) However, if the niece, or her parent, was adopted, she is still a niece but shares no genetics with you and so would not be considered a "blood relative" by those who use that term.

You can't claim citizenship by a ancestor. My family came from Londonderry Ireland in the 1600's to the Virginia colonies, but I can't get Irish citizenship from Ireland because they were Irish.
