Yes long term use and/or abuse of antihistamines can cause kidney problems. Some of the problems a person may have is very diverse. Some of the more serious are kidney stones and kidney failure. I have pretty bad Allergies and the summer time is the worst time of the year for me. In the 4 months I was taking OTC antihistamines on a daily basis and at the end of the summer I had 2 kidneys that were caused from the antihistamines i was taking. Also having taken the medications for so long and frequently I noticed the medications effects lessened as time went on so I can see how easy it would be for someone to begin abusing this medication.
