Answer Most sensors are one of the following types: Pressure Transducers - detect air pressure or pressure from an applied force. This is a simple electical coil that changes resistance as the sensing surface is deflected. Speed transducer - Measures the speed of a rotating shaft. This is a electrical coil that generates a current based on the speed of the rotating surface.

Speed sensor- Some devices measure speed by counting the rotations of a shaft by sensing a Target as it passes by the Sensor(see next item). Proximity Sensor - This is used to detect when a part with a Target on it comes in proximity to a part with a Sensor. The sensor is a coil or device that detects metal near it. As the Target gets within its field, the sensor will change resistance. Later generations of Proximity Sensors will close and open a circuit to show Target Near or Target Far conditions. This sensor is used on a/c for Landing Gear Down and Locked or Flap Position indiction. Strain Gage - These are small (< 1.0 inch foil) stripes that are glued to a metal surface and imbeded in the strip are small wires that form a wheatstone bridge. When the wires are stretched, the resistance changes. The resistance can be calibrated and converted into Strain, which is directly related to Stress on the part. Heat gages & Sensors - Similiar to Straing Gages, the heat sensors measure the surface temperatures. I think that is all the basic types of sensors. Surprisingly everything can be reduced to one of these. In modern digital aircraft with computerized flight decks, these digital signals are collected and stored and used to monitor the condition of the aircraft.
