It depends on the year of the vehicle. Is it fuel injected, throttle body injected, or carbureted?
Your timing can be off. The carbureter may need adjustment. Or your electronic control unit could be bad. There may be a problem with the torque converter, as well. I'm pretty sure if you have a manual transmission you wouldn't get it in gear if there were a problem with the gears or clutch.
