Black lights that are available commercially are normal lights, but with a coating on the inside of them to block the visible light spectrum. Black lights are sources of the UVC wavelength which is harmless to any animal. Here is a great example of the ignorance of people regarding black lights "Seriously, don't even try it! And it probably can. If it doesn't it will shock them anyway!" There are high intensity/high power UltraViolet lights which can be produced to kill microorganisms using UVA radiation. these are being adopted in water treatment plants because it doesnt leave any harmful chemicals such as chlorine in the water. but these are thousands of dollars each, and would burn your skin from direct exposure. (very different from black lights)
