Many women take calcium supplements for osteoporosis, and for that, it is a good thing.

However, some studies are now showing that these supplements may also increase the risk of dementia in some women. Women who have already had strokes (or other causes that decrease circulation to the brain) are at a seven times higher risk than women who do not take calcium supplements.

The study also addressed calcium directly from food, which did not appear to pose a risk. If you are on calcium supplements, and are also in the increased risk group, it is a good idea to speak to your doctor.
