What would cause a vehicle to lose power while driving?

If you lost power while driving and it did not start again, it could be an alternator issue. Double check the battery just to make certain it isn't an issue with the cable connectors too.

Does an alternator charge a battery while the car is not running?

No , just when the engine is running

You were driving down the freeway and your car just started shutting down and stopped acclerating then would not start back up and while car stopped the battery light was on.?

DEAD ALTERNATOR

Why is the car battery charging at 14 volts running and 13.5 not running?

your alternator charges the battery while the car is running. The alternator actually puts out a higher voltage than 14 volts while it is running, but it is reduced by a voltage regulator (most of which are already built into the alternator housing), to prevent damage and premature death of the vehicles battery. While your car is not running, the alternator is not charging the battery, and the 13.5 volt reading you get is just the measurement of the voltage the battery is holding at that given point.

Can an automobile battery be recharged just by driving it a long distance?

Yes, if the alternator is functioning and you are not loading the charging circuit (using as much charge as the alternator is putting out so the battery receives nothing). Please note that "Idling" to charge the alternator normally does not work as the alternator is not turning fast enough to charge the battery, it only maintains the status quo for energy usage.

Will a bad alternator drain a new battery?

Yes, it sure will. The alternator's purpose is to replenish the battery. The alternator may either drain a battery while sitting if the diodes in the rectifier leak current (like a check valve) or may just not maintain the system load while your engine is running. (not keep up to the demand/not charge at all)

Flashing battery light on 2002 ford expedition?

just happen to me today the flashing battery light means your alternator is going bad and it is draining your battery..so your car may crank a few minutes before, but may put you down while you're out and about so be careful where you drive, because your battery can lose power in less than a minute of driving because of the alternator..car will stall instantly.

What could cause engine to try shutting down while driving and battery going dead overnight if battery and alternator have been replaced?

Sounds like the engine is using the battery as the source of power instead of using the alternator. The main job of the battery is to give power to the starter that "starts" the engine. Once the engine is started the alternator kicks in to maintain power throughout the vehicle, as well as keeping the battery strong. But if the alternator isn't working, the engine will get it's power from the battery. And without the alternator keeping the battery strong, the battery will die. Note: between the alternator and the battery, there is a voltage regulator, this make sure that the battery only gets the power it needs. Oh, one more note, here's a way to tell if the alternator is working properly. (Start the engine, while it is running remove one of the battery cable for just a few seconds.)if the engine stops, then you have an alternator problem still. Check your wires. Or replace the unit. for more answers. email tjjjlong@aol.com A constant 12 volt drain on the electrical system, even when the car is off

What would cause all Gauges and tachometer to fluctuate and warning lights to slowly brighten and then dim during driving while all fluid levels are normal on a 2000 DODGE NEON?

Could likely be a dying battery or bad alternator. I would have your battery checked out. This just happened to me and turned out that my battery was bad.

While driving your car it seems to lose power also if you are at a redlight it stalls today it just stopped completely the car was still running but when pressing the gas petal there was no movementt?

it may be ur alternator, once the car is running the alternator keeps ac current flowing and to necessary components if the alternator dies out/stops working the components that run the car which were powered by the alternator are now run off the battery which is dc (direct current) this will only last so long and when the battery is drained while driving you will lose the ability to accelerate and/or gage indications. This can be dangerous for obvious reasons and I suggest that you fix it as soon as u can rather than just jumping ur car and driving like this for prolonged periods of time.

Does a computer reset after an alternator is replaced?

The computer only resets when the battery is removed. The alternator just charges the battery, so if the battery is left connected when the alternator is replaced, the computer should not reset.

89 prelude shut off while driving but started after jumped but didn't keep running for long it wasn't the alternator?

I've had that same problem. My first guess would be the alterator. but, save your self the trouble of taking it out by first taking your battery to an auto zone and let them test the cell for you, if your battery cell is bad, it doesnt matter how good your alternator is, it just wont hold a charge, period. if its not the battery, then its definitely the alternator.
