computers are used in department stores to ring your purchases and charge you. or to see if any new items have come into stock.

----

Outlets have a range of differing systems. For the customer they work as a till, however, because they are computers they are connected to a "back office" server which records all the financial sales by department if required, it can supply a running total, daily weekly monthly and some even yearly. The systems are now more financial variable by accepting debit and credit sales, vouchers and discount cards. They have protocol that monitors the sales of stock, provide reports on how products are selling. They are used to order stock for replenishment, with some communicating directly to a head off system where they compile sales for marketing and purchasing teams and thereafter can actually provide communication for orders to the manufacture.

Some systems will order directly from warehouse for direct to home delivery can be used to return stock in to systems like ware house inventory. Some have a PDCU (portable Data Capture Unit) capability that allows staff to print shelf edge tickets whilst on the shop floor to make sure that the store is legally compliant.

So the days of the old shop till are - gone!
