Yes it can, it happens often in books. Conflict between two characters or parties can cause shy people to finally speak out (good thing) it can also make people decide decisions wrongly (bad thing). So conflict changes friendships, relationships, and people in good and bad ways. It makes people stronger but not always in a good way.
