yes it's both common and sometimes healthy for a dog to eat bones... Though there is a possibility of splinters or choking from bones especially in smaller bones! Though I recommend though that smaller bones like those from a chicken are never given to a dog as I know first hand they can kill one, and so recommend such bones as a cows thigh. In this day and age though there are substitutes for bones that are both healthier and safer for a dog!
