Kept in a low-humidity, sealed container, dry dog food (kibble) will last for months w/o spoiling. Depending on conditions, if you see any mouse or rat droppings, mold, or if your dog reacts poorly to routine diet with which he or she was previously fine, throw it out. @~$30 per 40 pound bag for quality food, it's less expensive than a trip to the Vet. At our kennel, (18 working dogs + boarders) we've gotten a bad run of food a couple of times in the last 6 years.
Wash everything thoroughly, gloves and HOT water. If conditions persist after replacing the old with new food that's exactlythe same; then, see your Vet. The dog(s) may need a boost to recover.
Feeding the number of working dogs that we do, I found a "deer mouse" (about halfway between a large mouse and small rat) in the packaging. Rotting, it was making the dogs ill and sometimes the food may simply have been poorly manufactured.
Anytime your dog's behavior changes suddenly, get them to the Vet ASAP -- as was the case where China manufactured food was contaminated a few years ago and potentially fatal.
